In recent years, there has been a growing awareness and concern over the impact of the fashion industry on the environment and human rights. And it’s not just limited to clothing - jewellery is also part of this issue. That’s why ethical and sustainable jewellery matters now more than ever.
At BIANKO, we're committed to creating not only beautiful jewellery but also sustainable and ethical pieces that have a positive impact on the world. We believe in creating products that don't harm the environment and the people who make them. That's why we use high-quality, sustainably sourced materials to create our jewellery.
What is Ethical and Sustainable Jewellery?
Ethical jewellery refers to jewellery that is produced in a way that prioritises fair labour practices, safe working conditions, and human rights. This includes transparency in the supply chain and ensuring that workers are paid fairly for their work.
Sustainable jewellery refers to jewellery that is produced with minimal impact on the environment. This includes the use of recycled materials, responsible sourcing, and minimising waste throughout the production process.
Why does it matter?
The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world, and jewellery is no exception. Mining precious metals and stones can cause damage to the environment and can be harmful to the health of those working in mines. Additionally, some mining practices contribute to the exploitation of workers and communities in developing countries.
Choosing ethical and sustainable jewellery helps to address these issues. By choosing jewellery that is produced with fair labour practices and minimal impact on the environment, you can feel good about your purchase and its impact on the world.
At BIANKO, we take a slower approach to fashion by using high-quality, sustainably sourced materials and producing no more than we need. We aim to provide jewellery to the conscious customer and understand that creating our designs requires the Earth’s resources and energy. Our intention is to reduce our environmental impact wherever possible, without compromising on the quality and beauty of our jewels.
We are proud to announce that in early 2022, our workshop was officially certified as a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council.
Furthermore, the factory in which our pieces are manufactured has received their SEDEX certification, meaning they adhere to the global standards of ethical, sustainable and responsible business practices. This is quite a significant achievement as it enforces our values, including equal pay and representation of genders in management positions, pay for overtime worked and recognised parental leave.
In 2022, we also made the transition to a made-to-order business model. By doing so, we aim to minimise waste and leftover stock by only producing what is required to meet the demands of our customers and clients.
